This vintage is an aromatic explosion. At release, this wine is showing an incredible array of potpourri aromatics; dried roses, pomegranate, myrrh, frankincense, and lava rock. This wine is compact, with gorgeous layers of dark fruit flavors and generous dusty tannins. Sagrantino is one of the most ancient of the European wine grapes. It was the main grape that was used in the production of sacramental wines for centuries. Grown on the edge of the Columbia Gorge, this wine continues to show exceptional promise. This wine will evolve in bottle and will benefit from further cellaring.
“The 2018 Sagrantino “Sacris” from Golden Cluster is the first ever bottling of this Italian variety in the history of Oregon. It was aged in a mix of older French and Hungarian oak casks for twenty months prior to bottling, without fining or filtration. The bouquet is deep, complex
and quite expressive out of the blocks, offering up scents of dark berries, black cherries, a bit of road tar, bonfire, fresh herb tones and a touch of Bandol-like tree bark. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, robust and chewy, with a fine core of fruit, good soil signature, firm tannins
and a long, complex and tangy finish. This will need some bottle age to let its tannins soften up a bit, but it has the balance and depth to age long and gracefully and will be a fine drink in due course. 2028-2060. 91+.”
